Getting Started with PMM

PMM internships integrate your classroom learning with practical experience in a teaching setting for ministry. Placement in an approved teaching setting (e.g., church, agency, campus ministry, hospital, retirement community, social justice ministry, etc.) should provide experience in a broad range of ministerial learning activities.

In all instances, learning partners from the PMM site will help seminarians develop learning goals, engage together in regular theological and leadership reflection, and participate in an evaluation of the seminarian’s learning.

M.Div. seminarians are required to complete 4 credit hours of PMM. The pre-requisite to begin the PMM requirement is 24 credit hours that include Spiritual Formation - MM101 and MM102.

Seminarians may use any combination of a full-time summer internship and a part-time year-long internship to satisfy this requirement. Here are your options (Please note that seminarians will not be placed at their home church unless they are employed there.):

Part-time Year-long Internships (1 credit hour per semester) Expand
  • 8-9 hours/week for fall and spring semesters (including winter months)
  • PMM placements determined by May 1 for the following fall semester
  • Required orientation with both learning partners (1 of 3 dates provided)
  • Colloquy class, co-led by Wesley faculty and an area minister
*Full-time Summer Internships (2 credit hours per summer) Expand
  • 25 hours/week for 9 weeks (dates established by the PMM office)
  • PMM placements determined by April 1 for the following summer
  • 2 required colloquy class sessions (one in spring, one in fall)
  • Colloquy class online, led by either a Wesley faculty or an area minister.
*Additional Notes for Summer PMM 2022 Expand
  • All summer placements must be finalized/solidified by April 1st.
  • Solidification for a placement includes having brought the PMM office the following:
  • ◊ an approved site application (with the information for both a clergy or mentoring learning partner and a lay or site learning partner) - Profile Applications will be reviewed upon receipt; approval is not guaranteed,
  • ◊ written confirmation of interest from the seminarian, AND
  • ◊ written confirmation of interest from the site.
  • Interns are required to attend four colloquy meetings in order to complete their summer internship. These dates are during the internship (see the syllabus) and on Monday, August 29, 9 am-Noon.
  • Learning teams (intern, clergy or mentoring partner, and lay or site partner) are required to attend the June PMM-SPP Orientation Session. Register on the page: Applying for PM&M under the last accordion (+).
  • Colloquy work during the 9 weeks of the summer internship is in an online format through Blackboard.
  • The Learning Partnership (clergy/mentoring learning partner, lay/site learning partner, & intern) are expected to meet weekly for theological reflection throughout the 9 week summer internship.
  • Seminarians are not allowed to enroll in any other course or participate in an Intercultural Immersion during the 9 weeks of the summer internship.
  • Learning Teams are invite to attend together the PMM-SPP Orientation session in June. Please register online under the PMM menu Applying for PM&M.
  • Resources for the Summer Learning Partners are available online under the PMM menus Congregations & Non-profits and Current Learning Partnerships (instructions for obtaining these resources are shared at the spring colloquy meeting in April).
  • Seminarians may use the summer option to satisfy PMM 1 and/or PMM 2.
