CARES ACT Emergency Financial Aid Grants for Students

June 24 2020, 

The CARES Act Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund-IHE/Student Aid provides funding to institutions to provide emergency financial aid grants to students whose lives have been disrupted,  many of whom are facing financial challenges and struggling to make ends meet.  On  April 17 2020   Wesley signed the Certification and Agreement form and submitted it to the Department of Education in order to receive funds for Emergency Financial Aid Grants to eligible students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.  Wesley has received $71,460 in funding and we are committed to providing no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.

On February, 4th Wesley received $129,731.  On March Wesley received an additional $186,938.

These funds are designed to be used to cover expenses related to the disruption of campus
operations due to coronavirus.  

As of September 2, 2020 we are no longer accepting CARES Act applications

Who Qualifies Expand

In order to be eligible to receive a CARES Act Emergency Financial Grant students

  • Must be eligible to receive federal funds under Section 484 of the Higher Education Act
  • Must have been enrolled in at least 1 credit for spring 2020
  • Maintaining satisfactory Academic progress (C GPA)
  • US Citizen or permanent resident
  • Must have taken at least one face-to- face course during the Spring 2020 semester
  • Cannot be in default on federal student loans
  • Must be enrolled in degree or certificate program
  • Cannot be co-enrolled at other college or university where they can receive funds
  • Must not have a balance at Wesley of over $2,000

As of September 2, 2020 we are no longer accepting applications for Emergency Financial Grants.

 

To apply for the CARES Act Emergency Financial Grant, students must first have completed the 2019-2020 FAFSA if they have not already done so. Your application will not be processed until Wesley has a FAFSA on file.

The CARES Act Emergency Assistance applications can be found here. The application should be completed and sent to the Office of Community life at caresact@wesleyseminary.edu

Once a student's application has been processed, an email will be sent to their Wesley email accounts from the Office of Community Life notifying them of their acceptance status.

Frequently Asked Questions Expand

How will the grant funds be distributed?       

Payments will be distributed in the form of a check.  Checks will be mailed and student must  provide a current address where their checks should be mailed  

 

Once applications have been approved how long will it take for students to receive their checks?             

Upon approval, the grant will be placed on the student’s account. Students are eligible to receive the full amount of the grant regardless of their current account balance  The checks will be processed on a weekly basis just like student loan refunds

What emergency funds are available to international students?                                                             

International students seeking assistance should contact the Office of Community Life at caresact@wesleyseminary.edu

Do I have to repay the emergency financial aid grant I received from my university through the
CARES Act?

No. The funds provided by the CARES Act are grants, so they do not need to be repaid.

Can grant funds pay for housing tuition or other seminary fees?                                                           

No.  CARES ACT funds are designed to be used for technological, health care, child care, course materials, transportation from campus, food, moving or other expenses incurred as a result of the COVID-19 virus.

An acknowledgement that the institution signed and returned to the Department the Certification and Agreement and the assurance that the institution has used, or intends to use, no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.                  

On April 17 2020   Wesley signed the Certification and Agreement form and submitted it to the Department of Education in order to receive funds for Emergency Financial Aid Grants to eligible students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.  Funds were made available to Wesley on May 11 2020.

The total amount of funds that the institution will receive or has received from the Department pursuant to the institution’s Certification and Agreement [for] Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students.

Wesley has received $71,460 in funding

The total amount of Emergency Financial Aid Grants distributed to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act as of the date of submission (i.e., as of the 30-day Report and every 45 days thereafter).                                                                                                                                                 

No Funds were distributed during the 30 day reporting period

The estimated total number of students at the institution eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.                                         

We estimate that we have 500 students eligible to receive funds

The total number of students who have received an Emergency Financial Aid Grant to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.                                                    

No Cares act funds have been distributed as of June 10th.

The method(s) used by the institution to determine which students receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants and how much they would receive under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.                       

Wesley will use the financial hardship information provided on your form and the information from your FAFSA to determine the amount of aid each student receives

 

Any instructions, directions, or guidance provided by the institution to students concerning the Emergency Financial Aid Grants.

  1.   3. As of July 25, 2020 Wesley has distributed $20,750 to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.
  4. There are an estimated number of 500 students eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act

  1. On January 19, 2021,  the Department of Education provided an additional $71,460 under HEERF II grant provisions, bringing the total student grant provided for student emergency relief to $142,929.
  2. As of March 31, 2021 Wesley has distributed $64.850 in financial aid grants to 243 students who were  eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.                                                    

 

 

CARES Act Student Grant Reporting as of June 30, 2021 Expand
  1. On May 20, 2021, the Department of Education provided an additional $186,939 under HEERF III grant provisions, bringing the total student grant provided for student emergency relief to $329,868.

  2. As of June 30, 2021, Wesley has distributed $64.850 in financial aid grants to 243 students who were  eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

  1. On May 20, 2021, the Department of Education provided an additional $186,939 under HEERF III grant provisions, bringing the total student grant provided for student emergency relief to $329,868.
  2. As of August 12 2021, Wesley has distributed $250,800 in financial aid grants to 246 students who were  eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act under one of the three HEERF provisions.

 

CARES Act Student Grant Reporting as of January 10, 2022 Expand

CARES/HEERF Student Grant Reporting September 30 , 2021 Reporting date 10/1/2021

On May 20, 2021 the Department of Education provided an additional $186,939 under HEERF III grant provisions, bringing the total student grant provided for student emergency relief to $329,868.

As of August 12 2021 Wesley has distributed $250,800 in financial aid grants to 246  students who  were  eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act under the three HEERF provisions.

During the quarter ending December 31, 2021, there were no disbursement made from the student portion from HEERF I, II or III.

CARES Act Institutional Reporting as of June 30, 2020 Expand
  1. On May 21, 2020, Wesley signed the Certification and Agreement form and submitted it to the Department of Education in order to receive funds the institutional portion of the CARES grant.  Funds were made available to Wesley on June 2, 2020.
  2. Wesley has received $ 71,459 from the Department pursuant to the institution’s Certification and Agreement.
  3. As of June 30, 2020 Wesley has spent $11,560 on campus safety equipment including the LiveSafe App reporting tool, PPE, air filters and deep cleaning offices and dorm facilities. Wesley also issued housing refunds  to residents and commuter students in the amount of $20,078 and meal plan refunds of $1,275 for a total refunded to students of $21,353.
  4. The total year to date expenditures are $32,913

The seminary also invested in technology for classroom distance learning for the summer and fall terms. This included camera equipment, Zoom licenses and other peripherals.
  4. Year to date spending as of 9/30/20  is $67,458.
