The Chapel is named for Bishop Garfield Bromley Oxnam (1891-1963). Known as a social reformer, Bishop Bromley was ordained a bishop of Methodist Episcopal Church in 1936.

In 1958, Bishop Oxnam was successful in obtaining over $1 million from the Methodist Church to help found the School of International Service (SIS) at American University, the national Methodist university in Washington, D.C. His vision was to create an academic institution "pledged to the study, proclamation and practice of the principles of freedom and the maintenance of civil, economic, and religious liberty by training competent and consecrated men and women for the international service of the state, the community and the church."

Bishop Oxnam played a key role in realizing Wesley Theological Seminary’s move from Westminster, Maryland to Washington, D.C.,by arranging for the seminary to be built on land belonging to American University.

Oxnam Chapel was named in his honor, and following Bishop Oxnam's death in 1963, his ashes were interred behind the altar of Oxnam Chapel.

Two of the iconic symbols of Wesley are the Kettler Fountain and Elderkin Bell Tower. The Kettler Fountain was named for former Board of Governors member Miles Kettler and the Kettler family, long-time supporters of Wesley. The Elderkin Bell Tower rises 140 ft. above Massachusetts Avenue. The 4 bells of the tower are named for John and Charles Wesley and Wesley’s parents, Susanna and Samuel. The 1300 lbs. structure was dedicated October 1963, and was a gift of Clarence E. Elderkin, whose construction firm built the Wesley D.C. campus.

Greetings, friends!
At Wesley, we think of public theology as the work of prayer, reflection, and transformation we do in light of the public witness of the church. Public theology is woven into every aspect of the Wesley experience, but we also capitalize (pun intended) on our Washington location through programming and curriculum at our Center for Public Theology.
From a nine-day immersion in Iowa with faith leaders and organizers ahead of the 2020 caucuses, to film premieres of documentaries on Howard Thurman and Reinhold Niebuhr, to classrooms where we discuss war and peace, economics, race, gender, governance, and the public square: Wesley’s Center for Public Theology is a resource for our community as we enrich faithful Christian thinking and practice today. We host programming and courses on our main campus as well as our downtown offices, across the street from the U.S. Capitol and the Supreme Court.
Public theology at Wesley can be a specialization of your Master degree or you can earn a non-degree Certificate in Faith and Public Life. Interested in a shorter term opportunity to reflect on Christian social ethics and political theology? Consider our National Capital Semester for Seminarians or our Faith and Public Life weeklong immersion for undergrads, and have critical conversations with D.C. leaders working at the intersection of faith, policy and politics.
I invite you to join us in this joyous, urgent work at Wesley Theological Seminary, and please feel free to be in touch with me if I can answer any questions!
Hope to see you soon,
Rick Elgendy, PhD

Our Refectory is graced by “The Last Supper,” a unique artist/student collaborative work created by Catherine Kapikian, artist, founder and director emerita of Henry Luce III Center for the Arts and Religion.

Dr. Kapikian designed the piece - painted on five pre-fabricated wooden relief forms and on view across the dining hall’s 42-foot-wide soffit - with the intention of involving students in the creation of the work. Students were involved with tacking up seventeen full-scale unrefined drawings onto the Art Studio wall, then tracing refined drawings on one of the five primed and sanded wood relief forms. Working with Dr. Kapikian, students were even able to fill areas with color.

“Designing and creating large scale site-specific works within the context of religious communities and engaging members within those communities has always been a great privilege for me and never fails to be life- enhancing as well,” said Dr. Kapikian. (Notes taken from the January 29, 2019 blogpost “Installing The Last Supper” by Catherine Kapikian, https://civa.org/civablog/on-installing-the-last-supper/)

(Notes taken from the January 29, 2019 blogpost “Installing The Last Supper” by Catherine Kapikian, https://civa.org/civablog/on-installing-the-last-supper/)

This statue is an exact replica of the original equestrian statue which stands in front of The New Room in Bristol, England, a chapel built by John Wesley in 1780.

The English statue was made by A.G. Walker in 1934, and the replica was recreated in England and was dedicated on May 24, 1961. The depiction of John Wesley on his horse represents Wesley’s passion to spread the Gospel throughout the world. (Wesley Theological Seminary obtained the statue as a gift made on behalf of British Methodists by Lord J. Arthur Rank, a British Methodist layman who wished to support the connection between British Methodists and the Methodist church in the U.S. )

“Unite the pair so long disjoined, knowledge and vital piety” - Charles Wesley, ‘A Prayer for Children’

These words are on the cornerstone of our Library, written by John Wesley’s brother, Charles. As students pass the Library, it is a reminder that God calls the whole person to be formed for ministry, inspired by passionate faith and informed by theological knowledge.

Wesley's library is part of the Washington Theological Consortium, an association of theological schools in the DC area, that enables students access to over 1.5 million titles. Our Library's Rare Book Room proudly features a collection of letters written by John Wesley and one of his Bibles.

Your Graduation Day is Here at Wesley!

Each May, Wesley graduates, family, and friends converge at the Washington National Cathedral for one of the most joyful ceremonies of our communal life: commencement. Throughout the year, Wesley students are encouraged to take part of the neighboring Cathedral’s worship services, speaker series, festivals, and programs. Wesley regularly partners with the Cathedral’s Center for Prayer and Pilgrimage to host retreats and renewal programs. Additionally, many Wesley graduates and students serve in ministry at the Cathedral, and Cathedral leaders regularly offer courses at Wesley.

“The World Is My Parish”

This beautiful green lawn on the Wesley campus draws people together –where students gather for picnics or to study in the summer and fall, where neighborhood kids come to play and everyone sleds when it snows. In spring, the cherry blossom orchard trees are alive with vibrant pink blossoms, surrounding the lawn’s anchor, the statue of John Wesley (1703-1791) the founder of Methodism and our seminary’s namesake.

He appears on horseback, as it is said he travelled over 200,000 miles in his lifetime, primarily by horse, bringing the Good News of Jesus Christ to people on the margins of society.

In that same spirit of John Wesley, from this place of community, respite, and growth that students and graduates are sent forth to be channels of God’s justice, mercy, and grace in the world.

Wesley’s Center for Public Theology: At the intersection of politics and faith

The Center for Public Theology, in the historic Methodist Building on Capitol Hill and located next door to the U.S. Supreme Court, gives churches, clergy and lay leaders, and seminary students tools to help navigate the connection between faith and public policy. The Center seeks to improve the tone of national political discourse by fostering a new ethic of civil discourse and is non-partisan but not disinterested in the great issues of the day.

The Center is part of The Community Engagement Institute (CEI), whose Fellows program continues to be at the forefront of theological education, and at the heart of our theological education ethos. Wesley students and CEI Fellows are able to choose from a variety of specializations, including Public Theology, Urban Ministry, and Children & Youth Ministry & Advocacy. For seminarians at other institutions, the National Capital Semester for Seminarians (NCSS) enables other seminary and divinity school students to study at Wesley for a semester to take advantage of the networks, experiences and examples of those working and called to be at the intersection of faith and politics.

The theologian Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109) was the first to define theology as “faith seeking understanding.” As Christians, faith in and love of God brings a constant desire for deeper understanding. Enter a classroom at Wesley, and you will experience people passionate for God, seeking a deeper understanding of their belief in God and faith tradition. Both students and professors learn from one another, and discussions that start in class often continue out to the parking lot or to lunch in the Refectory. At Wesley, you will be challenged by new knowledge and different points of view, led by our internationally-renowned faculty. Seminary is a “seed bed” - prepare to be broken open and grow in your understanding and love of God!

Our Next Door Neighbor: American University

American University is more than a neighbor to Wesley. We share Methodist roots, as American University was established by the Methodist Church in 1893. Wesley also obtained land from the university to establish its new campus in Northwest Washington D.C. in the late 1950’s. From that supportive beginning, both schools have assisted generations of students and professors on both campuses. Whether sharing library or gym access, or offering accommodations to students, AU and Wesley enable the best of both campus to be available to our students and faculty. We have two joint degrees currently, and plan more in the future, and collaborate on webinars and other academic symposia. We know you will enjoy having access to a major university just steps away while completing your degree at Wesley! Wesley also coordinates with chaplains and counselors at AU to provide additional support for Wesley students, and Wesley students who are interested in campus ministry regularly intern with the AU chaplain’s office.

The National Mall has been called “America’s front yard” and is centrally located in Washington, DC, stretching over 2 miles from the Lincoln Memorial on the west end to the U.S. Capitol on the east. It is the site of historic presidential inaugurations and national protests, the Smithsonian’s annual Folklife Festival, the Kite Festival each spring, free outdoor movies and concerts during the summer, and much more.

Be a local, and do what Washingtonians like to do: take visiting friends on a magical walking tour of the illuminated monuments by night; picnic on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial; have a pickup game of kickball or tag football on the turf...you can make Washington your city!

Kettler Courtyard

The center of the Wesley campus is the Kettler Courtyard, named for Board of Governors member Miles Kettler and the Kettler family, long-time supporters of Wesley. Our key academic buildings, Trott and Kresge Academic Building, face the Courtyard as does our Library. Important moments in students’ lives happen here: the Orientation liturgy and class photo on your first day at Wesley. As you graduate from Wesley, your class will gather once again in the Courtyard for your Graduating Class photo. In between, it is a place where people meet to chat under the trees, take a break by the Kettler Fountain or find the perfect place to read by the Moses statue.

“Moses Striking The Rock” by sculptor Retha Walden Gambaro was inspired by the Scripture verse Exodus 17:6 - “The Lord said to Moses, “Strike the rock; Water will pour out of it and the people shall drink.”“

This depiction of sacred text was given by former Wesley Theological Seminary president G. Douglass Lewis and his brother Joe Lewis in 2000 as a memorial to their parents, Alton Douglass Lewis and Marion Hollis Lewis, “who instilled in generations a thirst to learn and serve.” (from the dedication)

The Community Engagement Institute is at the forefront of theological education, engaging secular and faith leaders around the meaning and shape of community. The Institute sits at a crossroads of many influences, located at the foot of Capitol Hill where elected leaders legislate, where God’s glory is magnified as the church “turns itself inside-out” to become a force in the public square. The Community Engagement Institute is a place where participating in the Reign of God requires teaching, learning and practicing social ministry entrepreneurship.
