New Graduate Remembers "powerful" PMM Immersion Experience
Elijah Ferebee is catching his breath. It has been quite the year - full-time study, working full-time as a Wesley Office of Admissions recruiter and being part of Commencement Class of 2019, graduating with his Master of Divinity. In a year of high points, he reflects and finds his PMM immersion experience has proven to be one of those powerful experiences that stay with him.
In January 2019, Elijah chose to visit the Pine Ridge Reservation in Pine Ridge, SD for his PMM Immersion trip. He stayed at the Pine Ridge Lutheran Retreat Center. Even though it was winter, Elijah surprisingly reported, “the temperatures were actually colder in DC, with the exception of the mountain region.” Some of the highlights of his trip were artist demonstrations, cultural presentations, working with children, which also confirmed his gift and vocation, and watching them dance in native attire for senior citizens, site visits to museums with original Lakota art, working on odd jobs in the community, visiting a bison farm, The Black Hills, The Badlands, and a very special visit to an Elder’s house to hear his stories, and then coming together at the end of each day to watch and discuss an educational film, and then joining together in a prayer circle. Elijah also had the rare opportunity to observe and participate in Lakota spiritual practices such as sweat lodging, sun dancing, and daily smudging. He recalls his experience of being “smudged” as “beautiful, I really appreciated it.” Overall, Elijah describes his immersion trip as a very powerful experience with a strong Christian presence.”
