Our RMs...

  • are students who care about the quality of community life and work to develop an enriching and engaging setting in which seminarians can grow socially and spiritually.
  • are matriculated students who have lived on-campus for at least one full semester prior to becoming a Resident Manager (RM).
  • work under the direction of the Director of Housing, under the auspice of the Associate Dean of Community Life to promote campus wellness and act as agents of campus hospitality.


What do Resident Managers Do?

Resident Managers facilitate community and ensure residents are able to live in a safe and nurturing environment in so many ways:

  • RMs provide support and assistance to the community best by being present and available while establishing good rapport with guests and building relationships with residents.
  • RMs coordinate programs and activities for residents, including the weekly Saturday Supper, holiday parties, dorm meetings and more!
  • RMs serve as liaisons between the Housing and Facilities Directors during non-office hours in the event of any urgent maintenance, safety, or security concerns.
  • RMs plan and staff check-in days for students at the start of new study terms. RMs greet and check-in guests who arrive during non-office hours including evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • RMs use their emergency preparedness training to give leadership and direction on campus in the event of an emergency.
  • RMs are chief emergency contacts in the event of seminary emergency (such as a visit from the Fire Department). RMs are responsible for reporting emergencies to proper authorities and Wesley personnel.
  • RMs advise the Community Life and Housing Office of any issues that may arise in residential living that potentially breach the Covenant of Professional Ethics or deteriorate positive relations between residents.
  • RMs may mediate minor conflicts or disputes between residents and inform the Housing Office of issues as they occur.
  • RMs understand and help others to understand Housing policies and contracts.
  • RMs distribute Wesley announcements and information to residents in person, on paper and via social media. RMs also maintain Housing bulletin boards.
  • RMs help host special campus guests by assisting in preparations, campus tours, and occasionally, with transportation.
  • RMs walk through their facilities each evening when on duty, regularly checking guest apartments before guest arrival and key drop boxes before their duty ends.
  • RMs assist with lock-outs when the Housing Office is closed.
  • RMs will write one residential/community life article for the Journal each semester.
  • RMs will encourage dialogue among residents by leading a Facebook question session one week per semester.
  • RMs will assist in the Community Life and Housing Offices three and a half hours per week (one morning or afternoon shift).
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Director of Housing or Associate Dean of Community Life.

When do Resident Managers work?

Resident Managers work both when the Housing Office is open and when the Housing Office is closed.

An RM living in Carroll, the NRH or Straughn is typically on duty one week night per week (Mondays through Thursdays, from 4:30pm until 8:30am) and once every four weekends (4:30pm on Friday through 8:30am Monday morning) during the Fall and Spring semesters. With a staff of 8 RMs at the 4500 location, this means that half of the time an RM is on duty will be spent as primary coverage and half as secondary coverage.  For example, this means that for regular weekday evenings (say, Tuesday nights), an RM will provide primary coverage the first and third Tuesdays and secondary coverage the second and fourth Tuesdays.  An RM will typically only cover one weekend per month, so one month will be a primary coverage weekend and the next will be a secondary coverage weekend.

Resident Managers also are on duty around the clock during holidays or when the seminary or Housing Office is closed (RMs each cover 1/4 of these holidays in any given semester).

During summer months, Resident Managers are typically on duty one week at a time per month.

Resident Managers continue to work for the community even when they are not officially on duty. Resident Managers are always Resident Managers, and are held responsible for upholding the community covenant and housing contract within the residence halls at all times.

Resident Managers living in the Birch Intentional Living Community are not on duty in the same sense. Because Birch RMs typically work only with the fifteen other residents living in the intentional living community, they are expected to be accessible to their residents and the Director of Housing as needed. An RM in the BIC is responsible for coordinating with his or her partner RM to ensure the community needs are met. RMs must communicate with the other residents of the intentional community their schedules as well as coordinate the schedules of other community members (such as during holidays). Resident Managers must also be present for regular Birch community events such as weekly meetings, retreats, and community meals.

In the Birch Intentional Community, Resident Managers provide leadership within the community to establish regular rhythms and routines and coordinate the planning of the community retreat. They serve as fully-committed members of the intentional community. They provide or coordinate hospitality with special guests or prospective students at the behest of the Admissions Office and they meet regularly with the Director of Housing, the Associate Dean for Community Life, and the Birch Intentional Living Community mentor.

Resident Managers also meet as a staff twice per semester with the Director of Housing to discuss projects and life in the community. Resident Managers support each other and work together to meet the needs of campus residents. They are expected to support one another's projects through work and presence and lend voice to the concerns/needs of residential students.

What do Resident Managers get paid?

Compensation for Resident Managers

All Resident Managers will be compensated for 16 hours per week for their on-duty hours at $9.50 per hour and receive a $200/month credit towards their housing.

Minimum Qualifications to become a Resident Manager

Resident Managers will be asked to play a big role in the residential Wesley community, and are therefore asked to meet the following qualifications to ensure that they will be able to fulfill their duties for the entire term:

  • 2.75 GPA or higher
  • Current campus resident of Birch, Carroll, Straughn or the New Residence Halls
  • Eligible for campus employment
  • Planning to live in Birch, Carroll, Straughn or the New Residence Halls for academic year 2014-2015
  • Available for duty one weekend a month and one evening per week (Monday through Thursday, Carroll, NRH and Straughn RMs only). Half this time is fulfilled as primary coverage, half is fulfilled as secondary coverage.
  • Eager and excited to participate in campus-wide events and be present in community on a regular and frequent basis
  • Available for Resident Manager meetings outside of on-duty work twice per semester
  • Available to stay on campus for duty some holidays
  • Willing and able to devote time while not on duty to developing a self-designed project for the community
  • Willing to commit to the following contracts:

Birch Resident Managers - July 1, 2014 - June 30, 2015
Carroll, Straughn and NRH Resident Managers - May 9, 2014 - May 11, 2015

  • Available to begin working on May 9, 2014 and to work the evening of May 12, 2014, and all day August 16, 2014 and August 22, 2014 (Carroll , Straughn & NRH RMs)
  • Available to begin working July 1, 2014 and to work August 1, 2014, August 16, 2014 and August 22, 2014 (Birch RMs)
  • Possess a spirit of hospitality, love for community and a team-centered approach to community building

Resident Managers work hard to develop and improve community life on campus. They are responsible, highly self-motivated, work well on a team and must be able to meet deadlines for projects and schedule team meetings. The ideal Resident Manager is involved in the life of the campus and seeks to delve deeper in relationship with others in the Wesley community.

Eight Resident Managers must live at the 4500 Massachusetts NW location, in Carroll (2), the NRH (3) or Straughn (3) Residence Halls and two Resident Managers must live in the Birch Intentional Living Community located at 908 Massachusetts Ave, NW. Resident Managers may be single students, married students, or students with children. They may be M.Div, MTS, or MA students. They must plan to be in residence for the entire term of their RM contract.
