Regalia and Fees

Online Regalia ordering has not yet begun. Developments will be forthcoming.

  • There are two fees related to graduation:
    1) The Wesley graduation fee
    2) The regalia rental fee (see below).
  • All graduands are also responsible for paying a $100.00 graduation fee to the Business Office.
  • Graduands are responsible for the Wesley graduation fee unless they withdraw from Commencement by March 1, 2013.

Regalia Ordering & Information

  • Graduands are required to rent a cap, gown and hood for the service. More information will be forthcoming.
  • Rented regalia may be purchased after the Commencement service for an additional cost, which is significantly discounted over the purchase price of new regalia. For 2011, the master's regalia purchase cost was $235.00 and the doctoral regalia was $350.00. This pricing is only guaranteed if the regalia is purchased immediately following the Commencement service.

  • All regalia may be picked up in the Registrar's Office. However, you must complete the Graduate Student Questionnaire (available online here) and bring the confirmation page with you to the Registrar's Office to receive your regalia. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 12 PM, and 1 PM to 4:30 PM. Other purchased items will be mailed directly to you, except for souvenir tassels, which will be included with your regalia order.
  • If you are unable to pick up your regalia prior to Commencement Day, please arrive between 9 and 11 AM to pick up your regalia in the Kresge Building, Room KG-01.
  • Gowns will need pressing prior to wear. Irons and ironing boards will be set up in KG-01 between 9 and 11 AM on Commencement Day for your use.

Drop-Off & Purchases

  • Immediately following Commencement, graduates must return all rented regalia in the Narthex within The Washington National Cathedral.
  • You may purchase your regalia after the ceremony. A representative from Herff-Jones will be available to facilitate returns/purchases. Form two lines for rental returns and purchases.
  • Purchasing regalia before Commencement is not a provided service. Those who wish to purchase new Regalia directly from Herff-Jones must still rent the appropriate regalia to wear in the ceremony.

Regalia Wear & Appearance

  • Graduands will wear the attire appropriate to the degree being conferred by the Seminary. Other attire, even if previously earned, is not suitable. (For example, a person with a non-theological doctorate who is receiving an M.Div. degree may not wear doctoral robes.) Only the hood of the Seminary is acceptable.
  • Dress such as military uniforms or clerical collars may be worn under academic attire by those entitled to wear such dress, but no insignia or awards (military or civil) and no professional accoutrements (such as clergy stoles) are to be worn on or over academic attire.
  • Graduands are not permitted to carry or wear flowers.
  • Academic regalia should be worn in a way that reflects the seriousness of the academic-liturgical occasion.
