A new Master of Arts program at Wesley can be completed in 36 credit hours, or as little as one calendar year of full-time study.

The MA is designed to prepare students for areas of specialized ministry. The course of study will allow students to self-design their degree plan to include foundational Bible and theology courses as well as concentrations such as children, youth and young adult ministry; faith and politics; prison ministry; religion and the arts; and multicultural ministry. These options for specializations are perfectly suited to new college graduates answering a call to full-time ministry as a youth director, music director or other non-ordained ministry or to persons working full-time and seeking to strengthen existing ministries. With more than 225 courses offered at Wesley each year, students can design their own specialization based on the gifts and calling each is given. The flexibility of the program will enable students to pursue unique objectives within a common degree program.

Some areas of specialization--including Children, Youth, and Young Adult Ministries; Emerging Ministries; Urban Ministry; and Arts and Religion—have suggested courses of study for MA students. Each of these areas includes 1-2 required courses as well as a choice of 1-2 additional courses from a list of options in order to complete a certificate of study in the given area.

While most Christian traditions require a Master of Divinity for ordination, nondenominational or independent churches often do not; students from these traditions will find the flexibility of the MA accommodating to work and life schedules while still gaining the basic theology and ministry skills necessary to succeed in ministry.

For many years, programs at Wesley have taught specific skills and disciplines for ministry alongside the core theological education curriculum. Since 1983, the Luce Center for the Arts and Religion has been emphasizing the importance of the visual and performing arts to holistic worship and religious experience. The Lewis Center for Church Leadership at Wesley has become the preeminent resource for church leadership ideas, research, resources, and training to foster an increase in congregational and denominational service, vitality, and growth. Through the new Master of Arts program, Wesley continues in its tradition of offering innovative educational models to equip preachers, teachers, and leaders for the church and the world.
