FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR INTERCULTURAL IMMERSIONS: Applications for Financial Assistance for intercultural immersions in January 2009 are available in the Financial Aid Office or PM&M office and are due to Mary Vibert, Director of Financial Aid by September 15, 2008.

SOUTH AFRICAN IMMERSION: Dates: December 29 - January 13. Cost: $4135. Deadline: September 15.
There will be discussions with local pastors and theologians about apartheid as well as reconciliation and ministry to the many refugees from Zimbabwe and other countries fleeing to South Africa. Other highlights include: stops in Cape Town and townships, a New Years' Eve watch night service and a New Year's Day Eucharist at the Cape of Good Hope. There will be visits to a game park, Robben Island (where Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years), Johannesburg/Pretoria, the Hector Peterson Museum, the Tutu and Mandela homes (the only street in the world with homes of two Nobel Prize winners), Alexandra (the setting of Mark Mathabane's books), the Apartheid Museum, the AIDS orphanage in the Wintervelt community (home of the Bokamoso Youth Theatre that sang in our Chapel service last January), the Cradle of Humankind and Sterkfontein Cave (the world's richest site of early hominid remains), and Freedom Park (which celebrates those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for humanity and freedom. "South Africa will always be with me," remarked one of the participants in the last trip. If you are interested in this immersion, please contact Eileen Guenther immediately at eguenther@wesleyseminary.edu.

ISRAEL IMMERSION POSSIBILITY, JANUARY 2-12, 2009: Dr. Art Thomas and Dr. Steven Rettenmayer, both adjunct faculty at Wesley Seminary, will be leading a trip to Israel that costs just $2798 (including airfare, first class hotels, entrance fees, lectures, two meals a day). Although this has not been designed as a Wesley immersion, Wesley students may sign up for it, take the tours, and then stay over for the three day extension option and meet with various Israeli figures to fulfill the immersion requirements. Students may also opt out of a day or so of the tour and meet with the Israeli leaders on their own. Assistance will be given to these students in finding suitable contact people in Israel. Seminary students from The Ecumenical Institute of Theology may be going as well. If you are interested in a brochure or further information, please contact Art Thomas at 410 756 6092 or athomas@qis.net and Dr. Joe Tortorici at jtortorici@wesleyseminary.edu. The initial deposit of $300 is due by September 18. The final payment is due on October 2. If one adds the trip after October 2, there will be a $100 late fee and can only be done space permitting. In addition to seeing biblical sites, there will be a lecture series given by scholars about "Jerusalem in the Time of Jesus", "Jesus' Ministry the Galilee", and "Geography and Its Impact on the Bible."

SEEKING DANCERS AND ACTORS FOR FALL ARTS PRACTICUMS:
The dance practicum, which meets Monday afternoons, seeks students and staff/faculty to join in a variety of dances for chapel services this semester. No dance training necessary. The course covers many types of liturgical movement - congregational, processional, proclamation through scripture and song, meditation, and celebration. This is a practical course which explores a spirituality of the body and the physicality of worship through the medium of dance improvisation and choreography. All bodies encouraged. Please contact Kathryn Sparks at dancingsparks@yahoo.com to enroll.

Ready to act? The Fall Drama Practicum is looking for actors, clowns, musicians, and stage managers for a production of "The Second Shepherds Play," the most famous of the medieval church "miracle" plays, in which a group of hapless English shepherds meets the Christ-child. This early comic drama offers possibilities for acting large and small, as well as a reverence for the mystery of the season. Contact Deryl Davis at ddavis@wesleyseminary.edu to be part of this exciting production.

SEARCHING FOR SONGWRITERS, VOCALISTS AND MUSICIANS: Wesley students are invited to participate in an exciting musical project. As part of a directed study course with Dr. Eileen Guenther, MTS student Tom Houck is producing a contemporary music CD about the life and theology of the apostle Paul. Wesley students are encouraged to submit songs, lyrics or poems about Paul. Musicians and vocalists are also needed to demo and work on songs, play in live venues, and potentially, record the album. For more details, call Tom at (703) 509-3728 or email at tom@faith360.org. More information is also available at www.faith360.org (click on The Paul Project).

PAYMENTS CAN BE MADE BY PHONE! You can pay your bill over the phone and all you need is the ID number on your billing statement (this number is also on your ID cards-- for returning students, the number is on the back of your cards, for new students, it is on the front of your cards). The number for this service is: 1-866-498-4011. Payments will be posted within 24 hours - one business day. Please note: this service will not give you an account balance.
