Doctor of Ministry Project Papers must meet guidelines established by the Wesley Theological Seminary Library. These guidelines will be mailed in late January to all students on the graduation list.
Your guide for style is:
Turabian, Kate L. A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations. 6th ed. Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 1996.
From Turabian, here are some short guidelines to follow:
3 sections to a paper:
- front matter/preliminaries
- text
- back matter or reference matter
Front matter: numbered with consecutive lowercase roman numerals, centered at the bottom of the page. See Turabian section 14.6-14.7.
- Title page: counts as page i but the number is not shown on it (sec. 1.7)
- Blank page or copyright page: counted in pagination but number is not shown on it (sec. 1.8)
- Dedication if included, see sec. 1.9 for guidelines and epigraph (1.10), counted but number not shown
- Table of contents: see 1.11-1.18, page numbers continue and are shown, roman numeral centered at bottom of page(s)
- See 1.19-1.31 if you include list of illustration, list of tables, preface, etc.
- Abstract: see library guidelines; show roman numeral page number centered at bottom of page
Text: may be divided into parts, chapters, sections, and subsections. See Turabian sections 1.34-1.38. Use consecutive arabic numerals. Using chapters as an example:
- Each chapter begins on a new page with a generic heading CHAPTER followed by a number (ONE or 1 or I), centered. Center the title of the chapter below the generic heading (see samples, 14.34 and 14.36). These headings should be spaced down from the top of the page, see the samples.
- The page number of the first page of each new chapter is centered at the bottom of the page.
- The remaining pages of the chapter are numbered with the page number in the upper right corner of the page, see 14.8. (These page numbers may also be centered)
- Each new chapter continues the arabic numbering. (Do not restart at page 1)
- If you have trouble with page numbering, try this: make each chapter a new section. Set "Different First Page" in Page Setup; on your second page Insert Page Number in the Header (right justified); scroll up to the first page Footer and Insert Page Number (centered).
Back or Reference Matter: appendixes, endnotes if used (Turabian notes footnotes are preferred), and bibliography.
- Continue the consecutive page numbers of the appendix(es) and bibliography as in the text above.
- On pages with major headings (NOTES, APPENDIX ONE, or WORKS CITED) center the page number at the bottom of the page.
- Continue numbering pages in the upper right in the body of each section.
- See section 1.44 for guidelines on including photocopied material in an appendix. You will be adding page numbers in brackets to this material.
