Music Courses

Wesley Seminary Church Music Courses emphasize music as a critical component of worship; most courses involve the creation of church services to interface with the particular music that is being discussed.  Teamwork between musician and clergy is of paramount importance, and Lecturer in Church Music Eileen Guenther's work with the Elders of the Wesley Chapel serves a model of collegiality. Dr. Guenther pays particular attention to providing multi-cultural musical experiences, which include music from around the world as well as from a variety of American genres including American classical, Shaker, Spirituals, gospel, and contemporary Christian. In addition to her work at the Seminary, Dr. Guenther has written and lectured often on this subject, and new articles under her name will appear in The American Organist and Worship Arts this Fall.

Music courses  taught by Dr. Guenther and guest lecturers include:

  • Chapel Choir (Fall, 1999)
  • Music Skills for the Local Church (Fall, 1999)
  • Chapel Choir (Spring, 2000)
  • History of Church Music in America (Spring, 2000)
  • Music Skills for the Local Church (Summer, 2000)
  • Exploring the Hymnal (Fall, 2000)
  • Contemporary Worship and Music.

From time to time, Dr. Guenther also lectures courses such as Contemporary Worship (April 4, 1999), taught by Dr. Lucy Hogan, Church History II (April 27, 1999), taught by Dr. Douglas Strong, and Old Testament Exegesis: Isaiah (September 18, 2000), taught by Dr. David Hopkins
