The following scholarships are awarded during the admissions process. In order to be eligible for these awards, applicants must be admitted by February 15 preceding the academic year they plan to enter seminary. Since this is only a partial list, contact the Financial Aid Office for a complete list of scholarships.
Merit Scholarships - Wesley offers several scholarships to students of all denominations based on prior academic achievement and demonstrated ability and potential for leadership in the church. These scholarships include the Governor's Award, Presidential Award, Dean's Award and Bishop's Tuition Scholarship.
Church Grants and Scholarships - Many churches and denominations make assistance available to students who seek to be ordained in their tradition. Those interested should consult their denominational administrator.
Kwang Lim and Korean Wesley Fellows - This scholarship is awarded to Korean students applying for the Masters of Divinity degree who demonstrate potential in becoming future leaders in the church in Korea. High academic achievement and strong ministerial potential are key factors in recipient selection.
Korean Endowment Scholarship and Transgenerational Scholarships - Each year, Korean and Korean-American students are selected to receive Korean Endowment Scholarships. Transgenerational Scholarships are available for the 1.5 or second generation Korean-American students who demonstrate strong ability and commitment to the ministry for the next generation of Korean-American English speaking congregations. There is a June 30 deadline for this scholarship.
Denit Fellows Program - This scholarship offers a combination of tuition, room and board. This award is given to a select group of Masters of Divinity students who are preparing for ordination in The United Methodist Church. Leadership and academic abilities are also taken into consideration.
Wesley Merit Scholar - This award offers its recipient tuition, room and board, and a living stipend. This is given to an African-American Methodist preparing for ordained ministry and exhibiting outstanding leadership and academic abilities.
Ellura Harvey Winters Award - This award is a one-year, full tuition scholarship given to an entering student who exhibits potential to be a great scholar and compassionate pastor in The United Methodist Church.
UMC MINISTERIAL EDUCATIONAL FUNDS
United Methodist students need to contact their Annual Conference to apply for tuition grants or service loans provided by the Ministerial Educational Funds (MEF).

The Reverend Charles W. Tadlock Scholarship
The amount of awards ranges from $500 to $1,000. Applicants must be certified candidates for ministry by an annual conference of the United Methodist Church, planning to enter parish ministry, have completed the first year of a basic seminary degree program, be academically above average, demonstrate financial need, and be a citizen/permanent resident of the United States. Awards are for one year only. However, one may reapply. Applications are available through the Office of Loans and Scholarships, P.O. Box 97 1, Nashville, TN 372021 or from the Director of Financial Assistance. Deadline: June 1.
The E. Craig Brandenburg Graduate, Awards
The amount of awards is up to $1,000. Awards are designed for graduate study for persons over the age of 35 with special needs due to a change of profession/vocation, interrupted study, or for continuing education. An applicant must be an active member of the United Methodist Church, committed to making a positive contribution to society, be a citizen/permanent resident of the United States, have a grade average of "B" or above, and demonstrate financial need. Georgia Harkness Scholarship Award
The amount of awards is up to $1,250. Awards are designed to assist women over 35 who are preparing for ordained ministry in the United Methodist Church. Applications are available through Georgia Harkness Scholarship Award, the Division of Ordained Ministry, P.O. Box 871, Nashville, TN 37202, or from the Director of Financial Assistance. Deadline: March 1.
United Methodist Scholarship Seminary Award
The amount of the awards is $1,000 - $1,500. Two awards are available to each of the thirteen United Methodist Church Seminaries for each academic year. The awards are designed for persons planning to enter the parish ministry and are made during the second year of study. Applicants must have been members of the United Methodist Church for at least 3 years and have completed their first year of seminary. Students must be nominated by their seminary. Deadline: June 1. Send a letter requesting nomination to the Director of Financial Assistance at your seminary.
United Methodist Foundation Scholars Program
Three, $3,000 scholarships are awarded to a first year student, a second, and the other is for a student in his or her final year and working towards an M.Div. Degree. Students must be full-time, U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and have been a member of the United Methodist Church for at least one year. Students may be nominated for this award only once. Students also will have a high G.P.A. (approx. 3.5) Interested applicants who meet the qualifications should write a letter, requesting nomination, to the Director of Financial Assistance. Deadline: September 1.
Dollars for Scholars Program: Local Church Matching Scholarships
This program challenges United Methodist churches to provide a $1,000 scholarship for a student from their congregation to attend a United Methodist-related school: college, university, or seminary. The first 100 churches to make nominations beginning in the1997-98 academic year will have their $1,000 contribution matched. Students must be in a full-time degree program and must be a full, active member of the United Methodist Church for at least one year prior to application. See Financial Aid director for application in December. Awards are VERY time sensitive
Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Scholarship
The amount of award is $1,000. Five awards are given to second or third year students at Wesley, who are United Methodist. Preference is given to D.C. residents. Deadline: June 1. Contact the financial aid office.
The Crusade Scholarship Program
This program is open to ethnic racial minority graduate students, i.e. African American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American and international students who are members of the United Methodist or affiliated churches. International students must apply from their homeland. Crusade Scholarships are granted to persons studying in various fields of interest. Applications are available from the Crusade Scholarship Program. Begin early for this one!
The Shisler Graduate Awards
Awards range from $500 to $2000. Awards are designed to assist graduate students preparing for careers as professional Christian Educators and Diaconal Ministers. An applicant must have been a member of the United Methodist Church for at least three years, be a United States citizen-demonstrate high academic standing, leadership ability, character and need. The HANA Scholarship
$3,000 is available for graduate studies. The purpose of these scholarships is to develop leadership in higher education and the HANA communities. Applicants must be Hispanic, Asian or Native American (at least one parent), members of the United Methodist church, citizens/permanent residents of the United States, and have financial need. Applications are available until March 1 from the Office of Loans and Scholarships, P.O. Box 871, Nashville, TN 37202, or from the Director of Financial Assistance. Deadline: April 1.
The Esther Edwards Graduate Scholarship
UMC Office of Loans and Scholarships, the United Methodist Church P.O. Box 871, Nashville, TN 37202. One annual award of $5,000 for a woman in full-time graduate study preparing for a career in higher education administration with a United Methodist college or university. Deadline: March 1.
Dempster Graduate Award For United Methodists in a Ph.D. program.
$10,000 per year. Must have received the basic divinity degree from one of the 13 United Methodist Seminaries. Contact your seminary for further information. Four awards granted each year. Deadline: February 1.
The Fellowship of United Methodists in Worship, Music, and Other Arts
The fellowship grants four $1,000 scholarship and the Tom Jones Scholarship, a $1,500 grant. Applicants must have been members of the United Methodist Church for at least one year, full-time music degree candidates or be doing special education in worship or the arts related to worship, demonstrate evidence of unusual musical or other artistic talent, effective leadership ability, and outstanding promise of future usefulness. The Stoody-West Fellowship for Graduate Study in Journalism
These grants are designed to assist persons engaged in religious journalism, or planning to enter this field, in graduate study at an accredited school of journalism. Applications are available from Nelson Price,United Methodist Communications, Suite l370, 475 Riverside Drive, New York, NY 10115. Deadline: January 17.
Chaplain Samuel Grover Powell Scholarship Fund
Awards are for at least $500. Applicants are expected to serve in the United States Military Chaplancy (preferably Air Force) upon completing seminary, be seniors or middlers in seminary, and be involved in the Chaplain Candidate (seminarian) Program. Applications are available from the National Methodist Foundation. Chaplain Powell Fund, P.O. Box 871, Nashville, TN 37202-0871. Deadline: July 1.
The United Methodist Student Loan Fund
Loans to graduate students are for up to $2,500. Applicants must be members of the United Methodist Church, United States citizens or permanent residents, demonstrate financial need, and be admitted to degree programs and maintaining a "C" average in degree programs. Loan applications are available from the Director of Financial Assistance.
The Frances C. Allen Fellowships
The Darcy McNicle Center of the History of the American Indian. The Newberry Library, 60 W. Walton Street, Chicago, IL 60610. Fellowships available to women of American Indian heritage pursuing graduate academic work. Stipends cover travel and living expenses. Deadline: February 1.
American Council of the Blind

General Federation of Women's Clubs
1734 N. St. NW Washington, DC 20036. Write to this address for the contact person for your home state. Most state Federations of Women's Clubs offer scholarships for women of all ages pursuing post secondary education.
National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution ( DAR)

International Peace Scholarship Fund
Amount of the award is $5,000 based on need. PEO Executive Office, 3700 Grand Ave., Des Moines, IA 50312. Provides grants to women from other countries studying full-time in the United States or Canada, and possible to U.S. women citizens. Write with qualifications for application August 15 through December 15.
