Faculty Position in Worship

Wesley Theological Seminary seeks to fill a tenure-track position in Worship. The candidate should have competence in liturgy and worship. A strong candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach introductory level as well as advanced and doctoral level courses in liturgy and worship.
It is desirable for the successful candidate to show familiarity with and teach in all or most of the following areas:

  • History and practice of worship and liturgy
  • Preaching and its place in worship / Homiletics
  • Wesleyan worship history and practices 
  • Contemporary forms and emerging patterns of worship, including current visual media trends 
  • Diverse worship traditions 
  • Multicultural and global worship
  • Worship and the arts

The candidate should also have pastoral experience and the ability to contribute to the leadership of the seminary worship program. The candidate should be committed to effective teaching, active scholarship, and participation in the seminary community. Candidates should have a deep concern for and experience in the formation of ministerial leaders and a record of personal engagement in the local church. M.Div. and ordination preferred. Communications Assistant, Lewis Center for Church Leadership

The position will provide communications assistance to the Lewis Center for Church Leadership. Position starts as soon as the selected candidate is available.

This position is responsible for the preparation of weekly, deadline driven communication material for the Lewis Center for Church Leadership. In particular the position will help the Center communicate about its work through its website (www.churchleadership.com), e-newsletters, and print publications.

Requires strong electronic communications skills, experience with websites, and knowledge of HTML and Dreamweaver. Also requires a strong knowledge of word processing and the Windows operating environment. Graphic presentation skills, desktop publishing skills, web media knowledge, and ability to connect with media outlets are integral to the position. A strong command of the English language and basic proof reading and editing skills are also needed. Attention to detail and good organizational skills are necessary. Experience with task- oriented, deadline-driven projects is essential, as is the ability to work cooperatively with others in a fast-paced team environment is crucial.

Program and Research Assistant, Lewis Center for Church Leadership

This position is responsible for assisting in implementing its program and research initiatives. Duties include for programs such things as planning for events, preparation of materials, monitoring of details, and assisting in the management of meetings both on and off campus. Duties for research projects include monitoring and following up on survey instruments, data analysis, preparing reports, and training in the Lewis Pastoral Leadership Inventory processing.

The successful applicant will have a college degree. Advanced degree may also be useful. Applicant must be proficient in database management and all Windows software applications, including Microsoft Office and Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point. Knowledge of web design, HTML and Dreamweaver desirable.

The position requires strong research skills (library, internet, and statistical), great attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines while managing multiple priorities. Administrative Assistant, Faculty Support

The Administrative Assistant for Faculty Support handles a wide range of tasks related to supporting the faculty of the Seminary. While reporting ultimately to the Dean, this person's primary responsibility is to provide administrative, clerical, and educational technology support to faculty members. This includes members of the core faculty, as well as the extended teaching faculty.

Qualifications: Effective completion of the duties outlined above requires at least two years of administrative experience, a full complement of secretarial skills, a creative approach to organizational systems, and a proven willingness to be flexible while paying careful attention to details and deadlines. Additional requirements: ability to type at least 55 wpm; proficiency in Windows software applications, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, Power Point, and database management demonstrated skills in office management, including filing and reporting systems, and streamlining of paperwork processes; demonstrated discretion with confidential materials; consistent attention to priorities and an ability to reassess tasks on a daily basis; proofreading/editing skills; familiarity with basic proofreader's marks, attention to grammatical structures, spelling proficiency, and awareness of bibliography styles and other styles related to research and publication.

Director of Housing and Administrative Assistant, Office of Community Life and Housing

This person will provide primary staff support for the Office of Community Life and Housing reporting to the Associate Dean for Community Life. Principal responsibilities as Director of Housing include; manage all day to day operations related to housing; manage guest housing operations; manage key control for housing; schedule and supervise Resident Managers; coordinate billing of housing charges; and notify the facilities office of repair needs. Principal responsibilities as Administrative Assistant for the Office of Community Life include; provide administrative and clerical support on a daily basis to the Associate Dean for Community Life; create and prepare documents for dissemination to the seminary community; assist with planning and publicizing community events; serve as a contact person for student services and community concerns; work with the Associate Dean to provide administrative support for all aspects of student orientation; coordinate meetings; manage health insurance enrollment and verification; and provide logistical support for special events. Vice President for Development   

Wesley Theological Seminary seeks candidates for the role of Vice President for Development.  This position is responsible for the planning and general oversight of the development program at Wesley Theological Seminary, a graduate theological school of The United Methodist Church located in Washington, DC. The Vice President for Development is considered the senior development officer at Wesley and reports to the President. The VP for Development represents the Seminary in local churches, to small groups, and individuals through both mail and face to face appeals. The Vice President for Development is expected to spend a majority of time in major gift cultivation and solicitation and works directly with the President to coordinate his work in development. The Vice President for Development is a key part of the senior administrative team seeing to implement Wesley's strategic vision.

Qualifications include knowledge and love of the church and outstanding interpersonal skills. Prior experience in fundraising or leadership in higher education, the church or business are preferred. Develop programs/activities to meet youth needs identified.

Youth Minister (Part-Time) Foundry United Methodist Church

Foundry United Methodist Church is a vibrant, reconciling congregation of 1,400 members in the heart of Washington, DC. Director of Homeless Ministry, St. Columba's Episcopal Church, Washington, DC

St. Columba's Episcopal Church, Washington, DC, seeks a part-time Director for its Water Ministry ("WM"), which offers hospitality to our homeless neighbors. WM is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 11am - 2pm, September through June. WM welcomes anyone who seeks hospitality and is prepared to abide by our house rules. We offer showers, laundry, lunch and fellowship to our guests. We receive between 25 and 50 guests per day, primarily chronically homeless men.  Since its inception in 1990, Water Ministry has been staffed and run by volunteers. Leadership for Water Ministry is shared among the Director, volunteers and the clergy.
The position of Director would begin in September 2008, with training in June. It entails  approximately 30 hours per week.

Responsibilities:
• Assume overall leadership of the Water Ministry, with the help of
volunteers and clergy.
• Be present from 10:30-2:30 on days when WM is open and oversee the
smooth operation of the shower, food and laundry services provided to our guests by volunteers.
• Meet with individual guests to listen and advise; provide minimal
non-cash support (e.g., buy shoes); make referrals to other agencies; maintain information on, liaise with homelessness resources.
• Coordinate with volunteers on scheduling, recruiting and training new
volunteers, handling internship requests.
• Oversee maintenance of kitchen, laundry and shower facilities.
• Keep records of WM usage, individual guest information.
• Oversee WM budget, including approving reimbursements of volunteer
expenditures for meals, and other disbursements on behalf of our guests; reconciling church and WM records.
• Prepare end of year operations/budget report to Outreach Committee.
• Ensure that guests adhere to the WM Code of Conduct (e.g., treat persons
and property respectfully, maintain limits on shower and laundry use, do not arrive drunk, etc.) If necessary, eject disruptive guests.
Qualifications:
• A call to serve the poor.
• Organized, mature, empathetic, self-directed, patient, and energetic
with a sense of humor.
• Bachelors, AA Degree, or equivalent experience.
• Ability to make a 2-year commitment.

The Office of Civic Youth-Serving Agencies/Scouting (OCYSA/S), General Commission on United Methodist Men (GCUMM), United Methodist Church, is in the process of identifying and recruiting chaplains for volunteer service at the 2010 BSA National Scout Jamboree, Fort A. P. Hill, Virginia.

Primary qualifications include being a United Methodist pastor (ordained preferred), active or retired. UM military chaplains, certified lay leaders with BSA summer camp chaplain experience and related positions, will all be considered. Ethnic minority candidates are encouraged to apply.

Candidates need to be in excellent physical condition and have an interest in the spiritual well-being of scouting youth and scout leaders in an outdoor setting.
