The Lewis Center for Church Leadership Celebrates Tenth Anniversary News and Events Lyndon Orinion Aug 22 2013 Ten years ago this summer, Wesley launched the Lewis Center for Church Leadership based on the belief that effective leadership is essential to fruitful congregations. Our vision was for a center that would become a trusted resource for church leadership ideas, research, resources, and training so that congregational and denominational service, vitality and growth increased. The Lewis Center earned this credibility through a perspective grounded in both vital faith and applied research. Its goal was to provide church leaders with strategic actionable insights they could use to enhance the envisioned service, vitality and growth During its early years, the center developed leaders through peer learning, including the Lewis Fellows program for young clergy, supported leaders during transitions in ministry, such as The Right Start program, and documented and responded to the crisis of younger clergy among denominations. The center has since expanded its focus to include helping clergy assess and enhance their leadership through the Lewis Pastoral Leadership Inventory™ (LPLI), equipping congregations to fund their visions, and helping churches reach more people, younger people and more diverse people. the biweekly Leading Ideas and monthly Update emails offering Lewis Center insights to thousands of church leaders from around the world Also this summer, the Lewis Center director, the Rev. Dr. Lovett H. Weems, Jr., released the book Right Questions for Church Leaders. Leaders do not need answers. Leaders must have the right questions. These two sentences introduce “The Right Question,” one of the most popular features in each issue of Leading Ideas, the Lewis Center’s electronic newsletter. This column grew out of Weems’s realization years ago that leaders spend far too much time trying to figure out the right answers to a range of issues facing congregational life. He felt that time would be more profitably used in discerning a few key questions that can change the direction of a church. In response to requests for a collection of questions used in “The Right Questions” column over the years, the Lewis Center has organized selected ones by topic and offers them in two collections. Right Questions for Church Leaders is available as an e-book for $4.99.
