Call to Seminary

Mar 01 2012

Moving to Washington D.C was intimidating for me. I lived in a small town all my life, went to college nearby, and most of my life planned on being a school teacher in our local school system. I was surrounded by great community and had my life planned out...
Then I felt a call to pastoral ministry.
Discerning this call has not been easy. I asked myself several questions over and over. Am I actually called to full time pastoral ministry? Should I go to seminary? What kind of community would there be at seminary?  Which seminary should I go to? (And when I decided on Wesley Theological Seminary.) What would it be like to live in Washington, D.C? Finally after much prayer and discernment I decided to give Wesley and Washington a chance.
Thank God I did.
I have been at Wesley just over a year now and what an incredible year it has been. I remember at the end of my first New Testament Epistles class I wanted to stand up and clap. I was so impressed with Dr. Carla Works and my eyes were opened to so many new insights about the Scriptures. I remember one evening when I wanted to get away from campus to be alone and pray I made the 5 minute drive to the National Cathedral and sat in that sacred space. I never imagined I would ever live close enough to the National Cathedral to just go there any given day for prayer.  Of course the community of fellow seminarians plays a large role in the memories of my first year as well.  I remember talking theology in the refectory at dinner, playing Monopoly in the lounge in Straughn Dormitory, attending a Mardi Gras party at the MVS Intentional Community, and sitting with a friend when I just needed someone to listen.
It has been a great year for me and I do indeed thank God that I decided to go to Wesley. As a result, I have been exposed to new styles of worship, I have been stretched theologically, I have come to understand more the importance of building community, and I have even met the girl who is now my fiancé.
What a year!
So if you’re like me and you are wrestling with the decision to make a move to Washington and attend seminary let me encourage you. Living in the city is definitely doable and is a lot of fun. Wesley Seminary is a great place where you will find people who care about you and want you to do well. You are sure to be grown in many different and new ways. This may not be in your plans but to quote the movie Dan in Real Life “plan to be surprised.”
