November 18, 2013, Washington, D.C. – The United Methodist Church’s Council of Bishops has elected Wesley alumnus Bishop Warner H. Brown, Jr., to serve as its president beginning May 2014. Brown graduated from Wesley with his Master of Divinity degree in 1974. He was honored in 1991 as a recipient of the Society of John Wesley Award. He served on Wesley’s Alumni Council in recent years.

Wesley President David McAllister-Wilson says, “Wesley Theological Seminary is proud that our distinguished alumnus, who received the John Wesley Society Award from his fellow alums, has been named president of the United Methodist Council of bishops. And I'm personally glad that this good and wise friend will be leading us at this critical moment.”

Brown is the presiding bishop of the California-Nevada Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. As council president, he will be responsible for presiding over the bishops’ executive committee and the twice-yearly council meetings. The Council of Bishops is made up of all active and retired bishops of The United Methodist Church.
