An extraordinary encounter with a nine-year-old boy in Zambia’s capital of Lusaka changed my life.

Lewis was an orphan living in extreme poverty. His parents had died of AIDS and his ailing grandmother took him in. In a disheartening twist of fate, Lewis was an inmate, a prisoner in an adult facility. Lewis suffered all kinds of abuse at the hands of both hardcore criminals and the police. His only crime was street vending, which carried a penalty of a simple fine. But Lewis could not afford it, so they put him behind bars.

When I looked into the terrified eyes of that young boy I was extremely infuriated with God. I questioned why He would allow such a thing. I wondered if there was anything I could do to help Lewis get out of this living hell.

While in contemplation, I remembered Matthew 25:36, “I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked...

The Maryland-DC Campus Compact celebrated its launch on October 26, 2012 on the campus of Montgomery College. Wesley Theological Seminary is a new member of this organization and is the only seminary. Representing Wesley at the launch of the Campus Compact were President David McAllister-Wilson, Dr. Sam Marullo, and student Aislinn Kopp. The Maryland-DC Campus Compact unites institutions of higher education that participate in service learning programs with the goal of making these programs more fruitful for both the students and the communities in which they work. The Compact allows the institutions to work together to gather and analyze data and to serve together to build “just communities,” as the theme for this year’s meeting stated.

The meeting of the schools in the compact was a chance for the presidents and service...

The first-ever College Day was held at Wesley on October 11, 2012. Undergraduate students from seven colleges and universities including Tennessee Wesleyan, Young Harris, the University of Kentucky, Marywood University, Seattle Pacific University, Lincoln University and Otterbein University joined the Wesley community for a day of theological exploration.

“It was a fantastic day for our first annual College Day. The visiting students were able to explore theological education at Wesley in all its contexts: classroom education, community life, and service to the world,” said Nick Works, Director of Recruitment at Wesley.

Twenty-four students experienced a student-led chapel service, visited Wesley@Mount Vernon Square, sat in on classes, and networked with Wesley students, faculty and staff.

This year, give a gift that truly makes a difference! Students attending Wesley Theological Seminary are preparing for ministry in the global church. They are preparing to be preachers, teachers and lay people in the Washington, D.C. metro area, in rural America, and in far-away places across the globe. These men and women are preparing to bring the Gospel’s message of hope to millions.

This Christmas season, you can give a gift that will support this Kingdom-shaping work. When you give a gift to Wesley Theological Seminary, we’ll send a personalized card to your family and friends to tell them how your gift will help to change the world. Gifts of any size help students to experience the preparation they need to faithfully respond to God’s call in their lives.

That was my first day of work as the Director of Communications for the Texas Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. I was an active lay person, but this new job presented an opportunity to use my gifts as a journalist every day for God’s glory. On that day, I heard God confirm the call to vocational ministry on my life with these words, ‘You will work for me for the rest of your life.’ I agreed, and soon began to explore seminary options.”

Originally from Houston, TX, Eleanor received a B.S. in journalism from Texas A&M University and an M.F.A. in theatre from the University of Houston. She is pursuing a Master of Divinity degree at Wesley.

“I chose Wesley because of its Urban Ministry program as well as its exploration of Religion and the Arts. I love that Wesley strives to honor the ways in which faith...
