2012 SPRING PHONATHON TO BENEFIT THE ANNUAL FUND FOR SCHOLARSHIPS AND STUDENT SUPPORT Jan. 30 - Feb. 11  Help strengthen Wesley’s Annual Fund by volunteering with the 2012 Spring Phonathon that will reach our alumni across the country. Student callers are needed. Staff and faculty are also welcome. No experience necessary. Training provided. Convenient two hour shifts still available- Mon - Fri: 2 - 4  & 4 - 6 pm; 7 - 9 pm and Sat. 12 - 2 & 2 - 4 pm. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR LECTURE January 31-- Come to worship and welcome Dr. Stacey Floyd-Thomas at 11 am in Oxnam Chapel. Dr. Floyd-Thomas joins us from Vanderbilt University where she is the Associate Professor of Ethics and Society. She also serves as the Executive Director of both the Society of Christian Ethics and Black Religious Scholars Group. Her work in Christian social ethics has a threefold focus--race, gender, and class--and she is equally interested in the challenges of religious pluralism, social justice and the political world. There will be a Dean's Forum in Elderdice Hall immediately following the lecture. Lunch is available for either $8 or a meal ticket.

FIND OUT ABOUT UM MISSION OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG ADULTS  Thursday, February 2 Dan Randall, M.Div., is a commissioned missionary with the United Methodist Church and currently serves as the Global Ministries Mission Interpreter for the Northeastern Jurisdiction of the UMC. CONSORTIUM PRAYER SERVICE for CHRISTIAN UNITY:  Join with other schools in the Consortium on Thursday, February 2 at 5:30 pm at Washington Theological Union to pray for Christian unity.  Following the prayer service, planned and led by the Student Board, Dr. Margaret O'Gara will receive the Ecumenism Award and present the Fourth Annual Figel Address.  Dr. O'Gara is Professor of Theology at the University of St. Michaels’ College in Toronto and is known for her scholarship on Roman Catholicism and ecumenical dialogue.  Visit washtheocon.org for more information, and RSVP to wtc@washtheocon.org or 202-832-2675.

WESLEY FELLOWSHIP and PLUMBLINE are hosting a Super Bowl party to include the Souper Bowl of Caring on Sunday, February 5 in Straughn's Welliver Lounge.  All are invited to come watch the game on the big screen and are encouraged to bring a favorite snack to share.  Drinks will be provided.  Also, as a way to share our resources, join with others around the country and bring canned goods or funds that will go to local food programs.

INTERESTED IN DEEP DIALOGUE ABOUT CONTEMPORARY RELIGIOUS AND SPIRITUAL TOPICS? Join a dialogue group at American University to speak from your own experiences and learn to listen and understand others' experiences. This spring semester, three topics involve religion:  Beyond Belief: A Dialogue on Religion, Faith and Secularism (Mondays, 5:30 – 8 pm), Women & Religion: Believe It or Not (Thursdays, 2:30 – 5 pm), Religion & Sexuality: Exploring the Divide (Thursdays, 5:30 – 8 pm). Dialogues begin the week of Feb. 20th. Applications to join are due February 6. EXPLORING WOMANIST THOUGHT OPPORTUNITY “Come to the WATER: Women in Seminary" is hosting a conversation on womanist thought at WATER on Wednesday February 8, from 6 - 8 pm.  Our own Dr. Beverly Mitchell will be joining the group to give a brief overview on womanist thought, touching on the history and the trends.  Please RSVP to Heather Smith (hnsmith86@gmail.com) by Monday, February 6.

TAX INFORMATION SESSION FOR F-1 INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS - February 9 from 12:15- 1:15 pm (K-114) OR February 14, 12:15- 1:15 pm (K-114) International Students, did you know that all F-1 students and F-2 dependents studying in the U.S. need to file U.S. tax forms by April 17, 2012? This is true even if you did not work on or off campus. Please come to one of two mandatory meetings to learn how to fill out these forms and everything else you need to know.  The information at this meeting will be different from last year’s meeting so please attend.  You may chose one of the two meetings to attend. NOW IN THE GALLERY-- “The Seminary Celebrates,” an exhibition in memory of Constance Sherridan Hefner featuring works by Wesley students, staff and faculty.  The Show runs through March 1.  This exhibition features both literary and recorded performance in addition to art for the first time in the history of this biennial show.   Gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 10 am – 4:30 pm.  Closed weekends and holidays.

NEW!  NON-SMOKING POLICY Wesley will implement a new non-smoking policy beginning February 1, 2012. The new policy prohibits smoking within 25 feet of any campus building. This policy was discussed and approved by the Community Life Committee, the Faculty and the Administrative Council. The Community Life Office will be implementing a communication plan to  promote the policy to all the constituents at Wesley. It will also be identifying  viable smoking cessation programs for those who would like to quit smoking. YOUR LIBRARY IS NOW OPEN LATER!  In response to community requests, the Library at Wesley Theological Seminary is pleased to announce a test-run of extended hours this semester!  The Library will be open until 10:30 PM Monday through Thursday.  But be aware: this is only a test!  At the end of the semester, we will evaluate the usage of the Library during the hours we were open and, if needed, will adjust the hours accordingly for future semesters.  We look forward to seeing you!  (Please note, the library is closed on Tuesdays during community worship.)

INCLEMENT WEATHER:  There may be days when Wesley Theological Seminary will need to close due to inclement weather or other   situations. On those occasions, a recording will be put on the seminary’s main phone line as soon as possible after any decision regarding closings or delayed openings is made. Every effort will be made to make closing information available by 6:30 am. When weather conditions change, the decision to keep the seminary open may be modified. Therefore, you are advised to re-check just before traveling to the Seminary.

The WTS Main Phone line is:  202-885-8600. Press 0 once the voice recording comes on (you do not need to listen to the entire message) to connect to the WTS opening/closing status line.
