As congregations address the demands created by the changing demographics of their communities and the gospel mandate to reach all people, this First Saturday Series invites both lay and clergy to be stimulated by a presentation and then participate in peer learning discussions to ask questions, voice concerns, get new ideas and strategies, and make plans for the future.

Projections vary, but in 2009 the District of Columbia Public Schools estimated that there are more than 1,200 students in their system struggling with homelessness. These young people are at much higher risk for dropping out of school, suffering from long- term unemployment, and entering the criminal justice system. Currently our city government is unable to mobilize the resources necessary to meet the needs of these most vulnerable young people.
The No Child Left Outside Summit will equip clergy and laity to leverage the assets of their faith community in support of meeting the needs of these children. Action sessions will provide attendees with tools and skills to take back to their congregations. The Summit will charter ongoing working groups that will continue mobilize resources in support of these children.
September 8 - October 13, 2010: The partnership between Asbury, Mount Vernon Place, and Wesley Theological Seminary is deepening. After engaging in three important discussions over the summer that centered on racism in Methodism, the historical divide between the two partner congregations over this issue, and sharing of our church histories, our dialogue continues in September. All are invited to join our journey together each Wednesday evening beginning on 8 September for a series of discussions to promote reconciliation. Each week a Wesley Theological Seminary faculty member will facilitate our use of the "Ministry of Racial Reconciliation" study guide that focuses on grace, confession repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation. We will gather from 6:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. each Wednesday. We will conclude our study on 13 October with a closing celebration and communal meal.
