The Rev. Dr. James L. Gulley, 1971 M. Div. graduate of Wesley Theological Seminary received the Society of John Wesley Award of Merit for graduates who exhibit a high standard of commitment and devotion to God, to the church and to Wesley Theological Seminary.
An ordained United Methodist elder and agricultural development specialist, he has been a missionary, pastor, teacher, trainer, program manager and evaluator within church, government and non-government organizations. Jim has lived and served in the United States, Africa, Asia and now in Haiti as the newly appointed Coordinator for Haiti for the General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM) and United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Jim is a member of the Rocky Mountain Conference of The United Methodist Church and serves on the Conference Board of Global Ministries. He also serves as Chairperson of the United Methodist Missionary Association (UMMA), a network of United Methodist missionaries.
On January 12, 2010, Jim was trapped along with five colleagues in the lobby of the Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, when the earthquake hit, killing at least 230,000 people and leaving 1.5 million homeless. Since then Jim has traveled almost monthly to Haiti, working closely with colleagues in Eglise Méthodiste d’Haiti (Methodist Church of Haiti) on long-term development issues.
Wesley President David McAllister-Wilson says about Gulley, “Jesus said, ‘feed the hungry’ and thank God, Jim Gulley took that literally. It is humbling to consider the number of lives that have been saved since Jim graduated from Wesley. He represents the vision to which Wesley Seminary aspires – to serve a missional church that seeks to witness to the Kingdom of God in the world and to do good well.”
In his remarks to graduates, Gulley said, “To be faithful to God's mission of reconciliation, healing and wholeness, we must follow Jesus to meet the poor and marginalized people not only abroad but within our own communities, wherever the wholeness of the good news of God's love has not yet been shared in its fullness.”
